System isolation

Separating affected machines or services to limit further spread of compromise.

System isolation is the practice of separating affected machines, accounts, or services from the rest of an environment to stop a compromise from spreading. In cybersecurity, isolation can mean removing a server from the network, blocking lateral movement, disabling shared credentials, or placing a host in a quarantine segment while it is investigated.

This matters because many intrusions expand through trusted connections. If an attacker gains one system, isolation limits access to backups, databases, admin tools, and other internal services. It is a common incident-response step when defenders suspect malware, unauthorized access, or tampering. In real recoveries, teams may isolate compromised web servers, rebuild them from known-good images, and verify logs and backups before reconnecting them. Isolation does not fix the root cause by itself, but it buys time and reduces the chance that a single breached system turns into a larger outage.
