Switching is the process of changing an electrical path or state so a circuit behaves differently. In hardware, that can mean routing current, opening or closing a contact, or selecting one of several signal paths. In electromechanical systems, switching may be driven by keys, relays, contacts, or other physical mechanisms that alter how electricity moves through the device.
In cyber security, switching matters because many attacks depend on controlling state changes: a malicious signal can force a device into an unsafe mode, disrupt timing, or reroute traffic through unintended paths. Defenders also rely on switching in firewalls, access control hardware, relays, and network infrastructure to isolate systems and limit damage. Understanding switching helps analysts reason about what changes, when it changes, and which downstream components depend on that state.
