Surface-mount components

Electronic parts mounted directly onto the surface of a PCB.

Surface-mount components are electronic parts soldered directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB) instead of passing through holes in it. This packaging style lets designers build smaller, denser, and faster devices, which is why it dominates modern hardware from routers to laptops and embedded security appliances.

In cyber security, surface-mount parts matter because many attacks and defenses happen at the hardware level. Attackers who tamper with devices may replace, add, or modify tiny chips, resistors, or memory parts to create hidden functionality or weaken trust in the board. Defenders use the same reality in reverse: board inspection, X-ray analysis, and controlled assembly help verify that components match the design and that no unauthorized changes were made. Because these parts are small and tightly packed, even minor soldering defects can also cause reliability problems that look like faults, making careful assembly and inspection essential.
