Supply chain transparency

Visibility into the vendors, components, and dependencies behind a service.

Supply chain transparency means having clear visibility into the vendors, software components, libraries, hosting providers, subcontractors, and operational dependencies that support a service. In cloud and AI environments, that visibility helps answer a basic security question: who actually touches the system, and through what paths?

It matters because attackers often target the weakest link outside the main product, such as a compromised supplier, a tampered update, or a hidden remote-management dependency. When defenders can map the full chain, they can assess trust more accurately, verify who has admin access, and respond faster during incidents. Transparency also supports safer procurement: buyers can demand software bills of materials, audit rights, logging access, and disclosure of critical third-party services. In practice, the goal is not to remove dependencies, but to understand them well enough to manage risk.
