Standalone microphone

A microphone that operates as its own device rather than as a simple accessory.

A standalone microphone is a self-contained audio device, not just a passive add-on. It may include its own preamp, digital signal processing, storage, controls, and sometimes firmware for features such as samples or effect presets. In consumer hardware, that makes it more like a small embedded system than a simple audio accessory.

In cyber security, that matters because every extra function can create attack surface. If a microphone stores content, accepts configuration changes, or connects over USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi, it may expose firmware flaws, unsafe file handling, or unauthorized control of audio settings. Defenders and reviewers look for update mechanisms, permission boundaries, and whether unnecessary features can be disabled. A teardown can reveal hidden components and help determine how much trust the device really deserves.
