SSH daemon

A background service that provides remote shell access and administrative command handling over SSH.

An SSH daemon is the server-side background process that listens for Secure Shell connections and handles remote login, command execution, tunneling, and other administrative requests. On Unix-like systems it is often called sshd. It is a critical management service because it usually provides direct shell access to a host, so its authentication and authorization controls protect the system’s most powerful entry point.

In cyber security, SSH daemons matter because attackers often target them for password guessing, key theft, misconfiguration abuse, or software flaws that allow pre-authentication access and command execution. If the service is exposed on a network it should not trust, a vulnerability can become a full system compromise. Defenders reduce risk by limiting reachability to trusted admin networks, using strong key-based authentication and MFA where possible, disabling unnecessary features, patching promptly, and monitoring logs for unusual login attempts or privileged commands.
