Spend telemetry

Metadata about how money is spent on software or cloud services, used to detect usage patterns.

Spend telemetry is metadata about how money is being spent on software, APIs, or cloud services. It usually includes billing events, account-level charges, usage volume, and cost trends, but not necessarily the content of what users sent or received. Security teams use it as a behavioral signal because changes in spending often mirror changes in access, workload, or abuse.

In cyber security, spend telemetry can help spot shadow IT, runaway automation, compromised accounts, and unusual API consumption. For example, a sudden rise in cloud charges may indicate a misconfigured service, an exposed key being abused, or a workload moving to a new tool. Defenders use this data for anomaly detection, budget governance, and alerting, but it is only a hint: higher spend does not by itself prove malicious activity. It works best when combined with identity logs, network telemetry, and application events.
