Soft-brick

A state where a device is still functional at the hardware level but is difficult to use normally.

A soft-brick is a state where a device still has working hardware, but normal use is blocked or severely limited. The system may power on, yet boot only partially, reject input, or stay trapped behind a lock, bad configuration, or recovery problem. Unlike a hard brick, the device is not physically dead.

In cybersecurity, soft-bricking matters because availability can fail even when no attacker has damaged the hardware. It can happen after a bad firmware update, a broken boot setting, or an access control that no one can reverse, such as a forgotten parental lock or lost administrator credentials. Defenders try to prevent this with safe recovery paths, factory reset options, signed updates, and documented ownership transfer procedures. Attackers may also abuse lockout mechanisms to deny service without destroying the device.
