Snippet eligibility is the search-engine setting and ranking state that determines whether a page can appear as a short excerpt in search results or other answer surfaces. If a page is eligible, the engine may display a title plus a few lines of text drawn from the page instead of only a link. This is important in cyber security because snippets can expose sensitive details such as internal hostnames, usernames, error messages, API paths, or fragments of confidential content.
In attacks, adversaries use snippet visibility for reconnaissance: exposed excerpts can reveal technologies in use, directory names, or weak points to target next. In defense, publishers and security teams control this surface with measures like nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet, noindex, and robots rules. Snippet eligibility is not a guarantee that content will be shown, but it is a key factor in whether search systems can surface a short, potentially sensitive preview.
