Skill taxonomy

A structured way to classify tasks and capabilities so they can be shared and reused consistently.

A skill taxonomy is a structured way to describe tasks, capabilities, and proficiency levels using consistent labels. In cyber security, it helps teams turn vague experience into reusable knowledge: for example, separating phishing analysis, log triage, malware reversing, cloud hardening, and incident containment into defined skill groups. That structure matters because security operations depend on repeatable decisions, clear ownership, and measurable training paths.

In practice, defenders use skill taxonomies to staff SOC roles, plan exercises, track analyst growth, and map controls to the people who can run them. They also support automation by making it easier to assign the right playbooks, detections, or approval steps to the right capability. Attackers use similar classifications informally to divide labor across initial access, persistence, credential theft, and monetization. For defenders, a good taxonomy exposes gaps before an incident does and makes expert knowledge easier to share, audit, and scale.
