Silicon photonics is a way to transmit or process data using light on silicon-based components instead of relying only on electrical signals. In practice, it is used for optical interconnects that can move large amounts of data between chips, servers, and racks with high bandwidth and lower signal loss over distance.
In cyber security, that matters because modern defenses and attacks both depend on the data path. Faster interconnects can help secure systems scale without creating a bottleneck, while also changing the threat surface around data centers, chip packaging, and device supply chains. Security teams may need to assess optical modules, firmware, and management interfaces just as carefully as traditional network hardware. Like other high-speed components, silicon photonics can also be relevant to physical-layer monitoring, tamper resistance, and forensic analysis of how data moves through a system.
