Signed vendor software

Code marked with a digital signature that helps Windows trust its publisher.

Signed vendor software is code packaged with a digital signature from the publisher, such as a hardware maker or software vendor. On Windows, the signature helps the operating system verify who produced the file and whether it was altered after release. This trust signal is important because it supports safer driver installation and reduces the chance that unsigned code is accepted automatically.

In cyber security, a signature is not the same as a safety guarantee. Attackers can abuse trusted installation workflows by making Windows fetch signed vendor software for a convincing fake device, then using the normal installer path to reach elevated privileges. Defenders should treat signature checks as only one control: restrict automatic device installation, limit USB and redirection features, and review any vendor software that runs with administrative rights or as part of driver setup.
