Signature validation

The process of checking that a digital signature is authentic and that the protected data has not been altered.

Signature validation is the process of checking that a digital signature is genuine and that the signed data has not been changed. In security protocols, the signature binds a message to a trusted issuer, so validation proves both origin and integrity. If validation is skipped, incomplete, or applied to the wrong part of a message, an attacker may forge or modify content and still have it accepted.

In SAML and other federation systems, signature validation is critical because it helps decide whether a login assertion is trustworthy. Weak checks can lead to authentication bypass, where a service creates a session for an identity that was never properly verified. Defenders reduce this risk by validating the correct signed elements, checking certificates and trust chains, enforcing expected audiences and recipients, and rejecting replayed or altered messages. Good signature validation is a core trust boundary, not a formality.
