Signal interpretation

The act of assigning meaning to data or biological activity, which can be incomplete if context is missing.

Signal interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to observed data, alerts, or activity. In security operations, the “signal” may be a log entry, an endpoint event, network traffic, or a user behavior change. Interpretation is never just reading the raw data; it requires context such as normal baselines, asset criticality, timing, and known attacker techniques.

This matters because incomplete context can turn noise into a false alarm or hide a real intrusion. In practice, defenders use signal interpretation when triaging SIEM and EDR alerts, deciding whether repeated login failures are a brute-force attack, or distinguishing suspicious PowerShell use from routine administration. Attackers also exploit weak interpretation by blending malicious activity into normal-looking behavior, flooding tools with noise, or living off the land so their actions resemble legitimate operations. Good defenses improve signal interpretation with correlation, enrichment, and human review.
