A shortcut is a faster input method that replaces a longer on-screen or keyboard sequence. It can be a key combination, a custom button, or a programmed macro that triggers an action with one press instead of many steps.
In cyber security, shortcuts matter because they change how users and tools interact with systems. Defenders use them to speed repetitive tasks in admin consoles, incident response, and accessibility workflows. Attackers can also abuse shortcut-like automation through macros, scriptable devices, or remapped keys to accelerate phishing actions, credential entry, or command execution. For that reason, security teams often review what external input devices are allowed, restrict unauthorized macros, and watch for unusual bursts of automated input.
