Short squeeze

a rapid price rise that forces bearish traders to cover positions.

A short squeeze is a rapid price increase that forces bearish traders to buy back the asset they borrowed and sold short. Their covering adds more buying pressure, which can push the price even higher and create a feedback loop. In trading, the move can look like strong demand even when part of the rise is caused by forced exits rather than fresh conviction.

In cyber security, short squeezes matter because many criminal ecosystems depend on crypto markets for payments, treasury management, and laundering. Sudden squeezes can change the value of ransom proceeds, distort liquidity, and trigger rushed position changes across exchanges and OTC desks. Defenders and threat researchers watch for these conditions because volatile markets can increase fraud, panic trading, and pressure on illicit funds. A squeeze is therefore a useful signal: it can create a sharp breakout, but it does not by itself prove durable strength or stable buyer interest.
