The shop floor is the production area of a factory where manufacturing work happens. It includes machines, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, robots, and the people and systems that coordinate them. In industrial networks, it is the operational environment where commands become physical action.
In cyber security, the shop floor matters because compromise here can affect output, safety, quality, and uptime. Attackers may pivot from IT systems into OT environments to reach production equipment, tamper with process values, or disrupt scheduling and control. Defenders protect the shop floor with network segmentation, strict access control, asset visibility, allowlisting, and monitoring for unusual commands or configuration changes. When MES or other supervisory tools interact with the shop floor, their permissions and trust boundaries become critical, because decisions made in software can directly alter what the plant does.
