SharePoint libraries are document repositories inside Microsoft SharePoint where teams store files, folders, and version history. They often contain sensitive internal material such as contracts, policies, project documents, legal drafts, or operational plans. Access is controlled with SharePoint permissions, which can be inherited, broken, or misconfigured at the site, library, folder, or file level.
In cyber security, SharePoint libraries matter because they are a common target for phishing, stolen credentials, and cloud account abuse. Attackers who gain access can quietly browse, sync, or export large numbers of files, then use the data for extortion, espionage, or lateral reconnaissance. Defenders should review library permissions, remove stale sharing links, monitor unusual downloads and access patterns, and apply least privilege and MFA to reduce exposure.
