Shared Backend Infrastructure

Reused server-side services that can widen the impact of one authorization mistake across multiple surfaces.

Shared backend infrastructure is a reused server-side layer that serves more than one app, portal, workflow, or admin tool. Instead of each surface enforcing its own access logic, multiple front ends may call the same API, database, or service. This design is efficient, but it also means one authorization mistake can affect many places at once.

In cyber security, this matters because broken object-level checks can spread across support desks, customer portals, export jobs, and internal consoles. If the backend trusts a record ID but does not verify ownership or tenant scope, an authenticated user may reach data that belongs to another account. Defenders should treat every request as untrusted, enforce server-side authorization on each service path, and test for inconsistent permission checks between shared components. Monitoring for unusual object hopping, cross-account lookups, or repeated access to neighboring IDs can help expose abuse of a shared backend before it becomes a broad privacy incident.
