Session recording is the capture of user activity, screen output, or video during an authenticated session. In cyber security, it is commonly used in privileged access management, remote administration, and compliance monitoring so defenders can review exactly what an operator did inside a sensitive system.
It matters because recordings can reveal commands, clicks, credentials entered into consoles, and other confidential on-screen data. In attacks, adversaries may try to disable, tamper with, or exfiltrate recordings to hide their actions or steal sensitive operational details. In defenses, session recording helps with forensic review, incident response, insider-threat detection, and policy enforcement. It is most effective when the recording system is tightly scoped, access-controlled, and protected like any other high-value security data.
