Server-side enforcement

Security checks applied on the backend, not just in the interface.

Server-side enforcement means the backend, not the browser or app interface, decides whether an action is allowed. Even if a button is hidden or a field is disabled in the UI, the server must still verify identity, permissions, object ownership, and request scope before returning data or performing a change. This is a core control because client-side checks can be bypassed by direct API calls, modified requests, automation, or tool-using agents.

In cyber security, weak server-side enforcement often leads to authorization flaws such as broken access control, IDOR, and privilege escalation. Attackers may reach files, records, or admin functions that the front end never exposed. Defenders use strict backend authorization, least-privilege tool access, allowlists, and per-request policy checks to ensure every request is validated where the data actually lives. In AI systems, this is especially important: a model can generate a request, but the server must still decide whether the request is truly permitted.
