Serendipity

The role of unexpected discovery in science, often arising from observation, chance, and human interpretation.

Serendipity is the unexpected discovery of something valuable through chance, close observation, and human interpretation. In science, it often happens when a researcher notices an anomaly that does not fit the original hypothesis. In cyber security, the same idea appears when analysts, red teams, or incident responders spot an unusual log entry, odd network path, or weak control that was not the original target of the investigation.

This matters because many real defenses begin with accidental findings: a hunt for one threat reveals another, a review of one system uncovers a hidden misconfiguration, or fuzzing exposes a bug no one expected. Attackers can benefit from serendipity too, by discovering exposed services, overlooked trust relationships, or side effects in software behavior. The security lesson is that chance only becomes useful when teams are prepared to recognize it, validate it, and turn it into evidence.
