Sequencer

A component that triggers notes or events in a set order over time.

A sequencer is a component that triggers notes or other events in a defined order over time. In music hardware, it steps through a pattern and sends commands at precise intervals, so a device can play rhythm, melody, or control signals without continuous manual input. In embedded systems, a sequencer is often a small state machine or timing loop that coordinates actions against a clock.

Sequencing matters in cyber security because order and timing affect how systems behave. A predictable sequencer can make firmware easier to test and reason about, but a flawed one can create race conditions, missed events, or state corruption. Attackers may try to abuse timing logic in devices that rely on event ordering, while defenders use sequenced input and replay tools to validate that firmware reacts correctly. In short, a sequencer is simple control logic, but it can strongly shape reliability and security.
