Seed

An initial value used to initialize a deterministic process, including a PRNG or parameter-generation routine.

A seed is an initial value supplied to a deterministic process, such as a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG). Given the same seed and algorithm, the process will generally produce the same sequence of outputs. Seeds can also initialize parameter-generation routines, making it possible to reproduce how cryptographic values were created.

In cyber security, a seed’s role matters more than the word alone: a public seed used to document cryptographic parameter provenance is not the same as a secret key or a signing nonce. A predictable or reused seed can be dangerous when it drives security-critical randomness, potentially making generated values guessable or repeatable. In a provenance review, researchers may test whether published parameters can be reproduced from a proposed seed and generation method. Reproducibility can support an audit, but does not by itself demonstrate a cryptographic weakness. Defenders should use trusted cryptographic libraries and ensure secrets and nonces come from appropriate secure randomness sources.
