Secure update mechanism

A method for delivering authenticated and integrity-checked software or firmware updates to devices.

A secure update mechanism is the process a device uses to receive software or firmware updates that are authenticated and integrity-checked before installation. In practice, this means the device verifies who signed the update, confirms the package has not been altered, and often checks version or rollback rules to prevent downgrade attacks.

This matters because embedded systems, industrial controllers, routers, and IoT devices can remain in service for years. If updates are not protected, attackers may inject malicious firmware, persist below the operating system, or block patches altogether. Defenders rely on secure update mechanisms to fix vulnerabilities at scale without replacing hardware, while attackers often target weak update channels, unsigned images, or poor certificate handling. A strong design usually includes cryptographic signatures, secure boot integration, controlled release channels, and recovery paths if an update fails.
