Secure remote access is a controlled way for approved users, vendors, or support staff to connect to sensitive systems from outside the local network. In cyber security, it is more than just “remote login”: it usually includes strong authentication, least-privilege permissions, encrypted sessions, logging, and session recording or approval workflows. In operational technology (OT), it is especially important because engineers often need to maintain plant equipment without being physically on site.
This term matters because remote access is a common attack path. If credentials are stolen, a remote support channel is poorly segmented, or a jump host is exposed, attackers can reach systems that control production or safety. Defenders use secure remote access to reduce that risk by limiting who can connect, when they can connect, and what they can do once connected. In practice, it appears in VPNs, bastion hosts, zero-trust access tools, and vendor support portals designed to protect legacy industrial environments.
