Scarcity pressure is a social engineering tactic that makes an offer seem rare, time-limited, or nearly gone so the target acts quickly instead of carefully. In cyber security, attackers use it to reduce the chance that a victim will verify a seller, inspect a login page, compare URLs, or question a payment request.
This tactic appears in phishing messages, fake “last chance” alerts, fraudulent marketplaces, and scam ads that claim a seat, account, or discount will disappear unless payment is made now. It works because urgency can override normal checks. Defenses are simple but important: pause before acting, verify the source through a trusted channel, use platforms with buyer protection, and treat sudden urgency as a warning sign rather than proof of legitimacy.
