Saturation

A condition in which a transformer no longer reproduces current accurately because its magnetic core is pushed beyond normal limits.

Saturation is a condition in which a transformer’s magnetic core is driven beyond its normal operating range, so the secondary output no longer tracks the primary current accurately. In a current transformer, this causes the measured signal to flatten or distort instead of rising and falling in step with the real grid current.

This matters in cyber security because industrial defenders rely on accurate measurements for alarms, protection relays, logging, and operator decisions. If a current transformer saturates, the monitoring chain can report the wrong value, creating blind spots that hide overloads, faults, or tampering. An attacker who can influence load, wiring, or instrument settings may be able to make telemetry less trustworthy without touching the control system directly. Defenses include correct burden sizing, calibration, testing under fault conditions, redundant sensing, and checking for inconsistent readings across the instrumentation chain.
