Safe defaults

Configuration choices that reduce risk unless a user intentionally changes them.

Safe defaults are configuration choices that minimize risk until a user deliberately changes them. In software, that can mean disabled remote access, least-privilege permissions, protected admin accounts, strong logging, or private-by-default data sharing. The goal is to make the secure option the normal starting point, rather than something users must remember to enable.

Safe defaults matter because many attacks succeed by exploiting what was left open, exposed, or overly permissive. If a cloud service ships with public storage, weak passwords, or broad API access, an attacker may not need a sophisticated exploit. Defenders use safe defaults to reduce that attack surface from the start, especially in fast-moving and AI-assisted development where configuration can be copied, generated, or deployed at scale. Good defaults make the secure path easier than the dangerous one.
