Runtime observation

Watching a program while it executes to capture behavior that static analysis cannot show.

Runtime observation is the practice of watching a program while it executes to see what it actually does. Unlike static analysis, which inspects code, binaries, or strings without running them, runtime observation captures live behavior such as loaded modules, network connections, file activity, memory changes, and conditional branches that only appear during execution.

This matters in cyber security because many threats hide until they run. Malware may decrypt payloads, unpack itself, or delay actions to evade static checks. Defenders use runtime observation in sandboxes, debuggers, system monitors, and instrumented test environments to confirm behavior and collect evidence. In reverse engineering workflows, it helps verify whether a binary’s observed actions match its structure. The limitation is that runtime observation only shows what happens in the tested session, so coverage depends on how the program is triggered and what inputs are supplied.
