A Radiology Information System (RIS) is the software platform that coordinates imaging orders, patient scheduling, procedure tracking, and radiology reporting. It acts as the workflow hub for a radiology department, linking scanners, PACS archives, hospital records, and administrative systems so staff can move from order to image to report.
RIS matters in cyber security because it handles critical clinical data and sits in the middle of a connected workflow. If an attacker gains access, they may disrupt appointments, delay scans, alter reports, or change patient or order details. In real environments, RIS exposure often comes from weak passwords, remote access, misconfiguration, or insecure integrations with other healthcare systems. Defenders protect RIS by limiting network exposure, enforcing strong authentication, logging changes, patching promptly, and separating it from unnecessary external access. For healthcare, RIS security is part of patient safety, not just IT hygiene.
