RF analysis is the study of radio-frequency signals to identify, characterize, or localize wireless emitters. In cyber security, it helps defenders understand what is transmitting, where it is coming from, and whether the signal matches normal equipment or suspicious activity. Analysts may look at frequency, modulation, power, timing, and direction finding data to spot a drone controller, a rogue access point, a jammer, or another unauthorized device.
It matters because many attacks and defenses depend on the spectrum. Attackers can use RF links for remote control, telemetry, spoofing, or covert communication, while defenders use RF monitoring to detect hidden devices and map their locations. In counter-drone work, RF analysis is often combined with radar, cameras, and acoustics. Passive RF monitoring is especially useful because it can identify signal patterns without necessarily inspecting message content, which can reduce privacy and legal concerns.
