Reprocessing is the chemical treatment of spent nuclear fuel to separate usable material from waste products. In a typical cycle, the used fuel is dissolved and processed so that materials such as uranium or plutonium can be recovered for reuse, while highly radioactive residues are prepared for storage or disposal.
It matters because reprocessing changes both the economics and the security profile of the fuel cycle. It adds facilities, transport steps, and accounting requirements, which increases the need for strict control of material, access, and records. In cyber security, the same systems that monitor inventory, chemistry, and plant operations can be targeted to hide diversion, disrupt processing, or corrupt safety-critical data. Defenders reduce this risk with network segmentation, strong authentication, audit logs, independent verification, and tight monitoring of industrial control systems.
