Replication role

A database account with privileges to connect for replication and manage replication-related objects.

A replication role is a database account granted permission to connect for replication and to work with replication-related objects. In PostgreSQL, that can include access to streaming or logical replication features, which move changes from one server to another. It is not a normal application account: it exists to support data synchronization, failover, backup, and change capture.

In cyber security, replication roles matter because they often sit close to sensitive internals such as write-ahead logs, decoding plugins, and server-side replication paths. If an attacker steals or abuses one, they may be able to read data streams, influence replication behavior, or reach code-loading surfaces that were meant only for trusted operators. Defenders should treat these accounts as high value: use least privilege, separate them from administrative roles, require strong authentication, restrict unneeded replication features and plugins, and monitor their use carefully.
