Renewable energy

Electricity generated from sources such as wind, solar, or hydro.

Renewable energy is electricity produced from naturally replenished sources such as wind, solar, and hydro. In cyber security, the term matters because these generation systems are usually controlled by software, connected networks, sensors, and remote management platforms. That connectivity creates attack surface: if an attacker reaches the control environment, they may disrupt output, alter monitoring data, or interfere with billing and maintenance operations.

Defenders treat renewable-energy systems as critical infrastructure. Typical protections include network segmentation, strong authentication, secure remote access, logging, and patch management for industrial devices and cloud dashboards. In real environments, cyber incidents often appear as phishing against operators, malware on engineering workstations, or abuse of exposed management interfaces. For attackers, renewable-energy assets can be attractive because outages, data manipulation, or service degradation can have wide operational impact.
