Remote execution

Running a workload on another machine, often through a hosted service or network-connected system.

Remote execution is the act of running a program or command on another machine instead of the local host. It may happen through a managed service, an admin tool, or a network protocol that exposes command execution across systems. In normal operations, this supports administration, automation, and cloud workloads. In security terms, the same capability is valuable because it shows where code can cross a trust boundary.

Attackers seek remote execution to launch payloads, move laterally, or turn a single foothold into wider control. Common paths include exposed remote management tools, vulnerable services, stolen credentials, or web shells that accept commands from an operator. Defenders reduce the risk by limiting remote access, applying patches quickly, using MFA, segmenting networks, and monitoring for unusual command activity. If remote execution is expected, strong authentication and detailed logging help separate legitimate administration from abuse.
