Remote content filtering

A mail control that blocks external objects such as images or stylesheets from loading automatically.

Remote content filtering is a mail security control that stops external resources from loading automatically inside a message. These resources include remote images, web fonts, stylesheets, and other objects referenced by URLs in HTML email.

This matters because “hidden” network fetches can expose user behavior, leak IP addresses, and confirm that a message was opened. In some webmail systems, remote objects can also be abused as part of larger attacks, such as tracking, phishing, or server-side request forgery attempts through misused fetch logic. Filtering these objects helps keep untrusted email content from reaching the browser or the mail server without explicit permission.
