Release threshold

A decision point that determines whether a model is ready for broader deployment.

A release threshold is the internal decision point that says whether a model is safe enough for broader deployment. It is usually based on testing, red-team results, access controls, abuse resistance, and how much monitoring can still be applied after launch.

In cyber security, the release threshold matters because once a model is widely available, the provider loses some control over copying, prompting, and misuse. A higher threshold can delay release until risks are reduced, while a lower threshold may speed delivery but leave gaps that attackers can exploit for phishing, malware assistance, or social engineering. Defenders use release thresholds to keep more options for intervention before a system is exposed to real-world abuse.
