Relay computer

A computer that uses electromechanical relays to perform logic operations.

A relay computer is a computer that uses electromechanical relays as its switching elements instead of transistors or integrated circuits. Each relay opens or closes a circuit, so it can implement basic logic such as AND, OR, and NOT. These machines are usually slower and noisier than modern computers, but they make the machine’s state changes physically visible and easy to follow.

In cybersecurity, relay computers are useful as a teaching model because they expose control flow, timing, and state transitions in a way that is easy to inspect. That visibility helps defenders understand how logic errors, stuck switches, or timing drift can break a system. The same lesson applies to modern attacks and defenses: systems with clear, predictable behavior are easier to test, monitor, and verify, while hidden or poorly documented logic can conceal faults or malicious manipulation. Relay computers are not common attack targets, but they illustrate why trustworthy systems depend on understandable behavior.
