A reference image is an input image used to steer a generative model toward a specific style, identity, layout, or composition. Unlike a plain text prompt, it gives the system visual constraints, helping it preserve features such as a logo, face, product shape, or scene structure across edits and new outputs. In image generation workflows, this improves consistency and reduces drift between iterations.
In cyber security, reference images matter because they can make synthetic content more convincing. Attackers may use brand artwork, profile photos, or screenshots as references to build phishing pages, fake ads, impersonation images, or identity documents that look aligned with a real target. Defenders also use reference images for legitimate purposes, such as brand monitoring, template comparison, fraud review, and detecting reused visual assets. The security risk is not the reference image itself, but how it can accelerate realistic manipulation when human review is weak.
