Recordkeeping is the practice of capturing and retaining key inputs, outputs, and decisions so they can be reviewed later. In cyber security, this creates an audit trail: who entered what data, what a system returned, which approval was given, and when changes were made. Good records help organizations prove compliance, reconstruct events after an incident, and identify whether a human, tool, or automated workflow influenced a decision.
In real attacks, poor recordkeeping makes it harder to spot fraud, unauthorized access, or malicious prompt and data manipulation. In defense, detailed logs support incident response by showing how an alert was triggered, whether a model produced unsafe output, and where sensitive information may have been exposed. For AI-assisted processes, recordkeeping is especially important because fluent outputs can hide bad inputs or weak review. Reliable logging turns a black box into something investigators and auditors can examine.
