Receptacle

The fixed outlet that accepts a plug and provides electrical connection.

A receptacle is the fixed electrical outlet that accepts a plug and provides a power connection. In North American standards, receptacles come in many physical forms, so the shape, grounding method, and voltage expectations must all match the device being connected. A plug may look ordinary, but it only works safely when the receptacle type is compatible.

In cyber security, receptacles matter because many attacks and defenses depend on physical infrastructure. Malware, tampering, and covert hardware can be blocked or enabled by access to power, so defenders care about outlet placement, locking enclosures, maintenance access, and electrical safety. In offices, data centers, and industrial environments, the wrong receptacle can create unsafe adapters, weak points in perimeter controls, or downtime for critical equipment. Understanding receptacles is part of understanding the physical layer that supports digital systems.
