Reasoning traces

Intermediate model artifacts that can reveal how a system arrived at an answer.

Reasoning traces are intermediate artifacts produced while an AI system works toward an answer. They may include hidden chain-of-thought tokens, scratchpad states, tool-use steps, or other internal outputs that are not meant to be shown to users. Unlike the final response, a reasoning trace can expose how the model decomposed the task, applied rules, or evaluated alternatives.

In cyber security, reasoning traces matter because they can leak sensitive model behavior. Attackers may probe an AI service repeatedly to infer decision logic, safety filters, or system prompts, then use that information to copy capability or evade defenses. For defenders, limiting access to traces, separating internal reasoning from user-visible output, and monitoring for unusual query patterns are important controls. Protecting these artifacts helps reduce model extraction and prevents attackers from learning how the system thinks.
