Read-only retrieval is access that lets a system fetch data without changing it, submitting forms, or executing code. In security tools and AI agents, this is the safest mode for browsing public content because it limits the side effects of a request to simple reading.
This matters because many attacks begin when a client is allowed to do more than retrieve. If a bot, crawler, or autonomous agent can retry aggressively, follow links, and send parameters, it may drift from harmless lookup into probing, enumeration, or accidental abuse of a service. Defenders use read-only retrieval to reduce risk by separating view-only actions from writes, logins, and command execution. Good controls also enforce this boundary at the API, browser, and permission layers so a failed fetch cannot become a state-changing request.
