Read-only contract call

A query that retrieves blockchain data without creating a transaction or changing chain state.

A read-only contract call is a blockchain query that asks a smart contract for data without submitting a transaction. Because it does not create a new on-chain state change, it is faster, cheaper, and usually does not require gas the way a state-changing transaction does. The call can retrieve stored values, configuration, or lookup results from a public contract address.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers can abuse smart contracts as a distributed lookup layer for command-and-control details. Malware can query a contract to learn the next server, key, or pointer while leaving fewer obvious indicators than a hard-coded domain. Defenders may spot unusual blockchain requests from web servers or hosts that have no legitimate need to read contracts. Monitoring those queries can help reveal hidden infrastructure and support incident response without relying only on domain takedowns.
