Ransomware recovery

The process of restoring systems and data after extortion-driven encryption or sabotage.

Ransomware recovery is the process of restoring systems, applications, and data after an extortion attack encrypts files, destroys backups, or sabotages normal operations. Recovery is broader than decryption: it includes rebuilding endpoints, validating clean backups, resetting credentials, and returning critical services to a trusted state.

It matters because an attacker’s goal is often to make restoration slow, unreliable, or impossible. In real incidents, criminals may delete shadow copies, target backup servers, or interfere with recovery tools so defenders cannot quickly roll back changes. Good recovery planning reduces downtime and limits leverage for extortion. Effective defenses include offline or immutable backups, tested restore procedures, protected administrative accounts, and separate recovery systems that attackers cannot easily reach. Without those controls, even a contained ransomware event can become a prolonged outage.
