Ransomware chain

a sequence of loaders and tools used to reach a final malicious payload.

A ransomware chain is the full sequence of loaders, scripts, malware tools, and access steps that lead to a final ransomware payload. Instead of dropping encryption software directly, attackers often use several stages: a document or archive opens a loader, the loader runs scripts or a backdoor, and those tools fetch or launch the final payload.

This matters because each stage can hide the next one and make detection harder. Security teams may see harmless-looking documents, unusual PowerShell or Python activity, remote-access tools, or staged downloads long before encryption begins. Defenders use that chain view to correlate alerts, block script abuse, hunt for persistence and lateral movement, and stop the attack early. In practice, the final ransomware name is less important than the path used to reach it.
