Quota abuse

Misuse of allocated service limits or promotional capacity to extract value beyond intended use.

Quota abuse is the misuse of allocated service limits, trial capacity, or promotional credits to gain more value than the provider intended. In cloud and AI platforms, quotas may include free compute, API calls, storage, or startup grants. Attackers and fraud rings can automate sign-ups, rotate identities, or spread requests across many accounts to harvest these limits at scale.

This matters because quota abuse often looks like normal usage until it becomes profitable. Instead of hacking the model itself, an adversary may exploit onboarding, billing, or trust checks to build a gray-market supply of access. Defenders look for synthetic identity clusters, repeated trial creation, unusual burn rates, shared payment signals, and account rotation. Controls such as strong verification, organization-bound credits, usage thresholds, and API key governance reduce the chance that promotional capacity becomes a resale pipeline.
