Public perception

the way audiences collectively interpret a person, company, or trend.

Public perception is the collective way people interpret a person, company, product, or trend. In cybersecurity, it matters because trust is part of the attack surface: users decide whether to click a link, install software, follow an account, or believe an alert based partly on reputation and familiarity. A company seen as careless may find its warnings ignored, while a well-known brand can be abused because attackers know users trust it.

Threat actors often shape public perception through impersonation, fake support pages, phishing, and disinformation. The goal is to make malicious messages feel normal, urgent, or authoritative. Defenders also manage perception through clear incident response, transparent communication, verified channels, and brand monitoring. Good security is not only technical; it also depends on whether the intended audience believes the right source at the right time.
