Protected sharing is a file-sharing method that adds access controls to a link or shared folder, such as a password, an expiry date, download limits, or device and recipient restrictions. Instead of making a file broadly reachable, it tries to ensure that only intended people can open it, and only for as long as needed.
In cyber security, these controls matter because shared links are a common way for data to leak. Attackers may guess or forward unprotected links, harvest files from public sharing pages, or abuse accounts with weak passwords. Protected sharing reduces that risk by shrinking the window of exposure and making access less convenient for unauthorized users. It is not a substitute for account security or encryption, but it is a practical defense layer in cloud storage, collaboration tools, and incident response workflows where sensitive documents must be shared quickly without being left open indefinitely.
